Organize your Home Tournament
Your home game can be run many different ways. I use the following features that you may want in your game. Be sure to custom your game to your players likings. There are so many things you can do. After each tournament take note of what people liked and dis-liked. You will be able to improve your game with the help your players.
Some of the things you may want to include in your home tourney are:
tournament invite email to potential players poker rules explanation of how the game of no-limit texas holdem is played (for your beginner players) print out of hand rankings and chip denominations tournament structure buy-in, rebuy and add-on information payout structure tournament blind timer photo of the winning tournament hand and players your personal tournament blog or poker page
Home Tournament Supplies you may need:
pen, paper and calculator laptop (with downloaded poker tournament blind timer) poker table and chairs poker chips snacks and drinks (unless of course you get everyone to bring their own or collect $2 from each player and your expenses are covered)

I email out the rules and details in PDF format ahead of time and ask for an estimate on who can make it. Then I look to fill the seats of those that can't.
I also email the results with our league points after the game.
Of course I always get a few suggestions and then I incorporate them into the next game. One good suggestion was the free poker blind timer at this forum.
Nice list though…I like some of the suggested food items. I usually ask that each player bring something for all. Kinda like pot luck…and drinks are BYOB.

Is it better have more people with a smaller buy in or less people with a higher buy in?

I found that having some written rules is a good thing. I proposed my house rules to the group and got their input and buy in. That has smoothed out a few rough spots that came up, such as some players using cell phones during a game.
