(1) If the host goes out early in the tourney, do they have the justification to force the last two players to “split” the pot so that he/she can finally go to bed and lock up?
Although the host has never “demanded” this as an actual house rule, too often there have been serious hints given to the final two. This eventually emotes guilt and respect for the host's obvious wishes that we normally give in. Unfortunately, this host has never made it to the final two so we don't know if he would employ the same limits on hinself. Your htoughts?

Tough one. I think it may have to be in the rules ahead of time to be fair. Although it is a home game and usually people are pretty good about it. It may depend on how much money we are talking about splitting.
Raise those blinds!!! and definitely have the new blinds in the next game.
Just my thoughts.

I don't think splitting is the best option, raising the blinds really fast like suarezj suggested is the most fair i think

daorock32, my wife plays poker too. I understand what you mean. It's actually pretty cool because it's something you can do together. I remember when we were first started playing online. Our days would start by having a single table tournament while we had our coffe and tea. It was a nice way to get your day going.

We always let the last two combatants decide. When you host the party you should always be aware that it may be a long game or a short game. I do not feel it is fare for the players or the hosts right to call the game. If you can not commit to a full evening of poker then ask some one else to host.

I agree that any case where a split might be “mandated” by the host, that should be spelled out before the game ever begins. Our games usually have enough of gap between 1st and 2nd that a win definitely beats a split – by a mile. I would hate to be forced to give up the chance at 1st, straight up.

It is always the players decision. As a host I would never do that to my players if i wanted them to come back. we play cash game after the tournament anyway so the game goes far into the night after the tourney is over.

I believe that the host should never force other players to split just because they've been eliminated early. I agree with above post that a cash game would be more suitable.

If you're going to host, you should let the players play to the bitter end regardless of how early you went out.
Whe hosting you know this is a possibility and should be prepared for it.

It would defenitly depends on the hour at which you are. at 11… c'mon, look some more cards… but at 3 o'clock… with the kids getting up at 6… c'mon, look some more cards!

I host a bi-weekly tourney at my place and I would never dream of forcing someone to split the pot. If I go out early and want to make it an early night, I have a designated second and third in command that can handle the money and any disputes as far as the rules go. Everyone knows these people and their “rank” so to say, and will respect rulings that they make. That takes some of the pressure off of myself and lets me take the night off if I bust early. Doesn't happen often, cause I like to watch, but if it does at least I know I have “outs”.
Peace,
Tyler
